Pages with fewer than 200 words may lack sufficient depth for search engines
What it is
crawler.sh flags a page as having short content when the extracted text contains fewer than 200 words. This is check #8 in the SEO analysis.
Note: This check requires content extraction to be enabled. If you crawled with
--no-extract, content checks won’t run.
Why it matters for SEO
Thin pages - those with very little content - face several SEO challenges:
- Ranking difficulty - Search engines generally favor pages with enough content to thoroughly cover a topic. Pages with under 200 words rarely rank well for competitive queries.
- Quality signals - Sites with many thin pages may be assessed as lower quality overall, affecting the entire domain’s ranking potential.
- Low engagement - Thin pages tend to have higher bounce rates and lower time-on-page, which are negative user engagement signals.
Why it matters for AEO
AI answer engines prefer content-rich sources when generating answers. A 50-word page doesn’t provide enough context for an AI to extract meaningful information or verify facts. Pages with substantial, well-structured content are more likely to be cited as sources in AI-generated responses.
How to fix it
Not all short pages are problems. Evaluate each case:
- Legitimate short pages - Contact pages, landing pages, or utility pages may naturally be brief. These are fine.
- Underdeveloped content - Blog posts, guides, or product pages with minimal text should be expanded with useful, relevant information.
- Hub pages - Pages that primarily link to other sections may benefit from introductory text explaining the category.
Guidelines:
- Don’t pad pages with filler content just to hit a word count
- Focus on whether the content fully answers the user’s intent
- Consider merging very thin pages that cover similar topics
What crawler.sh reports
In the CLI, short content pages appear under the “Short content” section of crawler seo output. Each affected URL is listed. In the desktop app, they appear in the SEO Issues card.
